A Copse of Scots Pine
Cardboard, acrylic, 47 x 47cms, 1 November 2022

It had been too long since I'd last painted. So it felt, although just a few weeks had passed. I wasn't in any hurry to get started, it seemed, and it was half-past eleven nearly before I sat down to paint. What about looking at the image? I've chosen something of a multi-media project around trees - reading, drawing, photographing, being among and painting. I was looking at an image from Sefton Park of a clump of Scots Pine. My overall aim was to be able to identify trees close up and from a distance.
I nearly forgot to look. How did the perspective work? The image was landscape, while I was using a square of cardboard cut to fit a frame I thought I'd never use...till I had the idea about the boxes. The perspective just about works, I think. The colours are appealing, but I'm not sure they do the subject justice. I'd like to show the finer detail more. Hopefully, this will improve in time.
I heard myself telling myself it wasn't going well, and, if I was an art judge, I'd probably agree. But I'm not. I liked what I was doing and, once I'd got beyound the negative self=criticism, I enjoyed my time, happily spent painting. I shared with friends too soon what I thought was the finished version. Returning to it after lunch, I could see a couple of areas where it might be better. I highered the top of the copse and decreased the proportions of a young Scots pine, standing in front. I hope it doesn't mind.
